Acoustic quartet Thunder and Rain will release their third studio album, Passing in the Night, on January 3rd, 2020. Six years on the road saw quite an evolution in the band and their music, and the new album finds the group digging back into their acoustic roots.

“If Passing in the Night were a movie, it would be a series of vignettes detailing the different ways two people can meet, connect, and then disappear from each other’s lives,” explained vocalist/guitarist Erinn Peet-Lukes. “This music is inspired by a whole host of genres – from classic country to old time bluegrass, pop, and folk. The strings add dynamic shifts for the confessional songwriting that comes directly from my life.”

Ever since Peet-Lukes founded the band with bassist Ian Haegele in 2013, Thunder and Rain has blazed their own trail. Their first album, Holler Out, showcased their uncanny ability to seamlessly blend various genres of music to frame their vivid storytelling. The following years saw Thunder and Rain touring the U.S., Canada, Ireland, and the UK with various band lineups and experimenting with various styles of music.

Passing in the Night, which became a reality due to a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign backed by the grassroots support of fans, marks a return to the band’s signature acoustic sound, with vocalist/mandolin player Dylan McCarthy, dobro players Allen Cooke and Chris Herbst, and fiddle player Natalie Padilla coming together at the Swingfingers Studio in Fort Collins, Colorado, to weave a together a rich tapestry of folk and bluegrass.

The resulting album features twelve original songs about transformation – something that the band can speak to after the changes it has experienced over the years – as well as the ups and downs that come with change. The group’s songwriting and musical artistry are on full display in the second single from the album, “Wine and Weed and You,” set for release on December 20th.
“‘Wine and Weed and You’ is about the ways we numb ourselves in order to get through heartache,” says Peet-Lukes. “These methods of escape – like intoxicating substances and empty romances – never get us very far from those dark feelings and often make them worse. This song calls out into that spiral of hurt, pain, relief, and coming back again.”
